Player and Banker are names for hands

Baccarat vocabulary, scoring and table variations, explained in short, considered notes.

Start with the labels

In a baccarat explanation, Player and Banker identify two hands. Treating those words as personal roles makes the game harder to follow. Read a worked round with two labelled columns, then write the cards underneath each heading. Keep the person observing the game separate from the name printed on either betting area.

Follow the published procedure

In the Massachusetts baccarat rules used as this example, an initial total of eight or nine is a natural. If either hand has a natural, neither receives another card. Otherwise a prescribed procedure determines additional cards, including circumstances where the Banker's action depends on the Player's third card. This is a rule sequence, not a free choice of when to hit.

Name the variant

When explaining a round, identify the exact baccarat variant and cite its drawing procedure. A screenshot of two hands cannot communicate every rule. An annotated example is more useful when it shows the initial cards, the applicable instruction, and the final result as separate steps.
